Formålet med hjemmesiden er at give alle interesserede svar på spørgsmålet: Hvordan kan jeg dyrke mine naturhistoriske interesser, dels som hobby, dels professionelt? Derfor kan man klikke ind på foreninger, ekskursioner, kurser, tidsskrifter og uddannelser. Desuden er der links til mange hjemmesider både i Danmark og i udlandet, hvor naturhistoriske interesser bliver plejet. Hjemmesiden huses og vedligeholdes af DanBIF-sekretariatet.

Mere end 238.000 lokaliteter rundt om i Danmark er beskyttet af naturbeskyttelseslovens § 3. Skov- og Naturstyrelsen har oprettet en hjemmeside om de beskyttede naturtyper. Her kan man finde en lang række oplysninger om de beskyttede søer, vandløb, heder, moser, strandenge, overdrev, ferske enge mv., blandt andet hvordan de er beskyttede, deres plante- og dyreliv samt hvordan der skal passes på disse naturområder.
